Totemic Mask

In this burlap mask, I first shape the form of the face in plaster in order to create the volumes of the nose, eyes and mouth. I then cover this base with burlap, whose raw texture becomes like a skin. The central seam and the shadows of the material accentuate the simple and silent expression of the face. At the top of the mask, fine stems bear small red forms that evoke a living head of hair or a vegetal crown. The eyes and ears are underlined by decorative elements, giving this textile sculpture a symbolic presence close to a totem or ritual mask.
