Head of Memory Bamboos

Japanese paperSculptures

In this sculpture, I've worked with the Japanese paper I roll up and call my bamboos, drawn up all around this dark head like an inner thrust. I punctuated their ends with small turquoise touches, almost like buds, signs of life emerging. Each bamboo is held, rhythmically repeated, creating a vibration between rigor and fragility. I like the tension between the softness of the paper and the firmer structure, like an unfolding thought, a memory that emerges and multiplies around the central form.
