Bamboo Arsenal Head

In this sculpture, I worked with the Japanese paper that I roll up and call my bamboos. I erected them all around this head shape, like a dense, almost bristly crown, made of rhythms and repetitions. Each bamboo is held in place by small metal elements, like points of attachment, memory nails. I like the contrast between the softness of the paper and the rigor of the structure, between the evocative plant life and the assertive sculptural presence. For me, these bamboos are thoughts, impulses, an inner energy that grows and unfolds, silent but alive.
