Solidarity Box

Books & Objects

In this box, I mixed paint and oil pastels to create a surface inhabited by small, very simple, almost childlike characters. I deliberately drew them alike, repeating them over and over again, so that none of them took over from the other. They hold hands, forming a continuous chain that envelops the entire work. For me, solidarity is at the heart of this piece: it structures the composition, holds the whole together. Unity comes from the physical link between the figures, from repetition and from the strength of the group, much more than from the isolated individual.
