In this video, Pierrette Gonseth Favre recounts how her childhood among seasonal workers, whose melancholy she perceived behind their well-groomed appearance, profoundly influenced her outlook and nourished her work.
Introduced to textiles at an early age by her grandmother, then trained in haute lisse, she nonetheless felt confined by an overly rigid framework until the day when, after the sale of the family farm, she rediscovered her mother's old jute sacks: their texture, repairs and experiences then became her true means of expression.
Through this material, she says she dialogues with humanity, which leads to powerful encounters, notably in Latin America where her work resonates with people who lived under dictatorship. Receiving an art award, she sees it not only as recognition of her art, but also as encouragement for persevering despite personal hardship.
